Part 1. Working files of photographs by Ginsberg, approximately 78,000 images. The working files are all of the negatives and contact sheets of photographs taken by Allen Ginsberg from 1943-1997. There is a total of approximately 2,625 rolls of film. Many of the contact sheets have Ginsberg's handwritten identifications on the back. In addition there are some duplicates of contact sheets from earlier printings, which have additional handwritten notes by Ginsberg. Part 2. Exhibition prints by Ginsberg, approximately 2,400 images. Part 3. Vintage snapshots, the "drugstore" prints taken by Ginsberg from 1944-1968. Many have hand-written notes by Ginsberg on the back of the photo. There are approximately 900 images. Part 4. Photos of Ginsberg as subject, approximately 10,000 images. This part contains photographs taken of Ginsberg and his friends by other people. Also included is a large collection of Ginsberg family photos originally belonging to Allen Ginsberg and/or his parents. Accession 2001-073 (1.5 manuscript boxes) are photocopies of the collection for reference use.

Irwin Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey to Louis and Naomi (Levy) Ginsberg. American poet, author, lecturer, and teacher who was one of the core members of the Beat Generation of American author's in the 1950's and early 1960's along with Jack Kerouac, William S.
